Aikido Club - News

Dear members of the Steel City Aikido Club,

firstly, congratulations to all members who graded Tuesday night!

Then, NEWSFLASH!!! Congratulations to national team members Maggy, Gemma and Louise who have just got silver at the world championships in Australia earlier this week, wouhouh! Maggy and Gemma are current members of the Club and with Louise, they have all been members of the Hallam University Club, well done!

A few upcoming events:

SAUK individual competition:

We are hosting the first individual competition for our national association SAUK (Shodokan Aikido UK). This will be held at the English Institute of sport on Saturday 26 September from 12noon, until around 4pm. Competitors from around the UK will take part in embu and individual shiai. The competitor accruing the most point over both disciplines will be crowned SAUK Champion. While this is not an event for beginners (ie people with less than 6 months experience), I encourage our latest recruits to come and watch this national competition and cheer for our Sheffield team!

SAYONARA PARTY:

We will be saying goodbye to longstanding members of the club Sam Coveney and Caspar Chater - Sam has moved to York, where he'll be helping setting up a club at York University with existing York Aikido Club members, while Caspar is moving to Mexico where he has already found a dojo to start a club!

So, to wish them well in their future life, on and off the mat, we will be training on Sunday 27th September from 1pm, when Sam and Caspar will lead the session one last time! After the session (60 to 90 minutes' long), we will be going for drinks and food.

AIKIDO MARATHON

For those of you who have recently joined our club, the wonderful world of the aikido marathon is yet to be discovered! This year, as ever, we challenge ourselves to train as many hours as we can in one day! We will be starting at 7am on Saturday 7th November and finish at...9pm! If the prospect of spending 14 hours training seems somewhat overambitious (!), we encourage you to train as much as you can, the aim is that challenge ourselves: this is not a competition - pushing yourself is more important, and having other people around us with the same goal really helps!

We will be covering all the kyu grade syllabus in 1 day, and us coaches will be taking it in turn to get us through it all, under senior instructor Scott's watchful eye! Under 14 juniors will be able to attend from 10am until 12pm.
More information on which charity we will be supporting this year to be announced soon.

See you guys on the mats soon!
