Dear all,
in this issue:
photos of Sundays session led by Sam and Caspar
upcoming events: this Saturday (3/10) - intro to aikido competition; aikido marathon on 7 November
---
Scott invited Sam and Caspar to teach an extra session as they are leaving Sheffield! The mat was full - I think all of us are going to miss these guys! Sam started and led us through rokuho taisabaki, literally 6-direction avoidance, we started by moving out of the way of a front attack, move into uke before throwing them. Sam related this to unsoku, an exercise we all know since we practise it every session and for our very first grading. To help us improve our posture and not lean forward, Sam got us bouncing in between every move, which achieved the trick of keeping us upright! We finished with a demo from the dan grades of all 7 moves. Then Caspar introduced us to the wonderful world of Goshin no kata (self defense kata devised by Professor Tomiki) by covering the first 4 techniques, all done from kneeling. Dan grades also demonstrated these 4 techniques before we cooled down and headed to the pub and restaurant.

Upcoming events:
This Saturday 3rd October (2-4pm) Intro to Competition / Shodohai
We have had a lot of newcomers and plenty of new students recently joining the dojo, which is the perfect opportunity to show what aikido competitions are like, how the events are scored, as well as giving our trainee referees ample opportunity to practise.
Please come to the dojo from 1.30pm to warm yourself up, take a drink and snack, come take part and enjoy the show!
The event will be FREE, so no reason not to take part!
Aikidoka who are 2nd kyu and above are very welcome to come from 12pm to practise refereeing, whether it is your first time or you are a registered referee.
There will not be a high grade session this Saturday.
Saturday 7th November - AikidoMarathon
This is our annual challenge where we push ourselves to train up to 14 hours in 1 day. Sounds mad?! Then come and join us!
Why you want to take part:
- we will cover all the kyu grade syllabus on the day, so you will have a better idea of what you are working towards and improve.
- we will take regular breaks - 5 minutes every 55 minutes - and keep the training steady, so actually this challenge is doable even to beginners - every year total beginners complete the challenge.
- you will miss out if you dont!
- and finally because, in spite of everything, this really is fun!
See you guys on the mats soon!
Celine
