Aikido Marathon 2016 - 9 days to go!

Dear members of the Steel City Aikido Club,

The Steel City Aikido Club is hosting its 10th AikidoMarathon on Saturday 12th November, in 9 days time. We held our first one in 2007 and have never looked back since! If this is your first year in the dojo, what is an aikido marathon, you may ask - here is how the day goes:

  • meet at the dojo 6.45am, wonder what you have signed up for! A few more people are arriving, it can't be that bad, surely?!
  • start 7am with Taiso and warm up; the sun is rising!
  • at 7.55am first 5 minutes break to get a drink and a snack, that was easy!
  • 8am another instructor takes the relay until 8.55am;
  • repeat the above 2 stages for 14 hours;
  • 10am - the juniors (under 14) join us for 2 hours until 12am, they are sooo cute!
  • 1pm half-way there, yay!
  • 3pm - jaffa cakes have never tasted so good!
  • 5pm - you can't tell your left from your right hand but you feel strangely elated;
  • 9pm the end! after a good stretch (oh yeah!)
  • head out to a restaurant nearby to refuel and celebrate!
  • on Sunday, REST and be amazed that you completed 14 hours of training in 1 day!!!

Well anyway, that's how I seem to remember my last 9 aikimarathon! I'm sure you guys would like to join us in this crazy endeavour?!

This year we are raising funds for the National Autistic Society, by vote from our regular members. Last year we fundraised for the sensory gardens at Burton Street and for the dojo minibus; we now have our dojo minibus and the newly planted orchard in the sensory garden had its first passion flowers, apples and sunflowers (amongst many other things!) thanks to members of the dojo and their donors!

I've set up a page on JustGiving so you can ask your friends, family and colleagues to raise funds to support you in your endeavour! Why not asking them to donate 1 pound for every hour you will train?
Here thew link to the Donate page - I couldn't delete my name from it, but this is the Dojo's page:

We will make the entry cheaper for anyone who has managed to raise at least £5, so make sure people donating for you leave a message mentioning your name!

Entry fees - to be paid on the day:
  • whole day: £30
  • whole day concession £20
  • COACHES: £15 - let me know if you intend to coach.
  • 2 hours: £15

Deduct £5 from the above if you have raised a minimum of £5 towards the National Autistic Society.

If you feel daunted by the prospect of training 14 hours...don't be! You will have plenty of regular breaks, you will be fundraising for a charity and ... you will not be alone! There's nothing like 20 other nutters by your side to make you feel better ;-) If you are only available for part of the day, better to train a little than not at all! And if you cannot be there on the day, please help us reach our £500 target for the National Autistic Society!

See you on the mats soon!
