Sheffield Aikido Newsletter 2011 - Kangeiko and Koshiyama Cup

Dear all,

Happy new year from the Steel City club! We have lost of events lined up for 2011, so plenty to keep you on your toes and fighting fit!

Shodohai and referee training Sat 5/02, Dartford
Scott will take a carful of us to Dartford. It's a good opportunity to do some shiai in a totally non competitive setting, as the aim is to provide bouts for referees to practice. If there's a technique you want to "roadtest", that's the ideal opportunity!

KANGEIKO 13-19/02/11
We will host our winter week of intensive aiki training from Sunday 13th to Saturday 19th February. With over 35 hours of training in 7 days, you can definitely rack up the hours and boost your level. We challenge you to complete 24 hours of training and to train every morning - go on, it's not that early, we only start at 8am on weekdays!
We'll finish on Saturday with a truly international dinner cooked by us, while celebrating Chinese new year and Chinese Valentine's day I'm told!
Get in touch if you want more info.

STUDENT NATIONALS - Sheffield March 2011, precise date to be confirmed
The student nationals are back to Sheffield! They were held in Nottingham, they were held in York, they were held in Leeds. And everywhere the Sheffield uni won! But I hear that Sheffield Hallam are keen to take it back from their arch enemy! Come cheer for Sheffield students and help organise the most lively and exciting aikido competition in the UK!

KOSHIYAMA CUP 30/4-1/5
After 3 years' absence, the Koshiyama Cup is back! This friendly international seminar and competition event is hosted by Shodokan Switzerland in Geneva in memory of Koshiyama sensei who had set up Shodokan aikido in Switzerland.  Our world technical director, Nariyama  Shihan, 8th dan, will lead the seminars on the Saturday and the competition will be on the Sunday.

Dates: Sat 30/04-Sun 01/05 2011
Location: Geneva
Competition entry fees: about £65 for seminar + embu + shiai. I'd try to get your uni to help you towards it if you are a student!
PS: no tanto randori no kata, only goshin no kata for dan grades; only randori no kata for kyu grades.

That's it for now, fellow Sheffield aikidoka, I hope this has whetted your appetite for lots of training this year!

Remember, contact me if you want more info on these events!

Further info on Koshiyama cup logistics:
A group of us went there for the first Cup 3 years ago, so you can ask these following guys for info: for Sheffield: Scott, Chris L, Richard, Caspar, Sam, Cora, Louise, Lee and myself; Ben for Nottingham and Justin for Leeds.

Cheap flights: through Easyjet (flybe, Thompson fly and BMIBaby...)
I've just done a quick search and found just under £50 per person from Manchester to Geneva for Easyjet, I've not looked at other options just yet, but let me know if you found some cheaper flights!

Accommodation:
it's in English so it's very easy! We stayed there last time and it was ok, no frills. It's 36 Euro per night for a 3 people bedroom.  (between £25 and £30 depending on exchange rates); so if you share a room with 2 other pals, you're looking at £8-10 per night. There again, if you find cheaper in the area, give me the heads up!
