Dear all,
here's our latest roundup of news and events for the Steel City Aikido dojo:
Great news! We have reached our fundraising target for the heating system! We have now started getting the ball rolling, by getting estimates for the heating system and its installation. I'll keep you up-to-date.
Next event: Saturday 29th March, Sheffield dojo - national referee course and kongodantaisen (friendly team challenge).
Scott will be leading this national SAUK course to build a bank of officials and referees for national competitions.
Beginners and kyu grades - we need you!
For referees to practise their skills, we have set up a mini friendly team challenge, called a kongodantaisen.
The kongodantaisen is an ideal introduction into competition as it's a short 20 minute event, which covers all aspects of competitive aikido, ranging from beginner level to people preparing for their dan grade. There are no medals, just doing your best. By having to practise under a little more pressure than normal sessions, you will rise up to the challenge and improve your skills.
This event is FREE and is open to all grades, juniors and adults.
Dan grades - Learn the basics of refereeing embu and shiai bouts.
If you want to referee at any SAUK event, you will need to be registered as an official SAUK referee. Registration is £40. This one-off fee covers the cost of a personalised referee T-shirt, a ring binder folder with the rules, and an SAUK referee handbook for recording your referee level (club/regional, national and international referee).

This session is open to coaches to learn and improve how to coach our system of aikido. In the morning, we will be reviewing our skills and swapping examples of exercises to teach a particular theme of aikido.
In the afternoon, when beginners and kyu grades join us, coaches will have the opportunity to put into practice what they learnt in the morning.
Last year, we covered the following themes: atemi waza, kansetsu waza, weapons and kihon kozo. We will let you know later what this year's themes will be.

See you on the mats soon!
