March Aikido Newsletter

Dear all,

First of all, thank you to everyone for supporting the dojo for our fundraiser: thanks to you all we managed to raise an amazing £1,465 on the crowdfunding website, with donations adding up to £200, so we sare tantalizingly close to our £2,000 target!

I'll shamelessly take this opportunity to plug the limited edition prints of the artwork designed by Scott, all proceeds (£24 each) going to the fund; I've even shared a picture of my own (attached).

And now, a few upcoming events:

  1. Tomorrow morning Wednesday (5/3, 8-9am) - Kendo, taught by 5th dan kendoka Colin McCurdy.
  2. Tomorrow evening Wednesday (5/3 5-7pm) - Grading, available to students and City members alike.
  3. This Saturday (8/3, 11am-3pm) - SAUK National Squad training. This training is for competitors who want to take their training to a higher level and take part in international aikido competitions. This is an open session, so if you are 2nd kyu and above (men) or 3rd kyu and above (women) and are interested in pushing your training further, turn up! Be ready for a dynamic session coached by national squad coach Scott Allbright. £10 students, £15 otherwise.
  4. Student national competition (Sat 5-Sun 6 April, Edinburgh) the friendliest aikido competition in the UK! And the Scots do know how to put a party on. For students. Members who are shodan and above and no longer eligible, please contact Scott to confirm you will be refereeing.

Finally, I wanted to share a great campaign started by the Sheffield University Students Union: the idea is that two friends of different nationalities - be they students, staff and alumni - take a "selfie"  and upload it to demonstrate the tremendous number of international friendships within the UK university community; email selfie@sheffield.ac.uk and share it on social media (#standbyme @standbymeselfie ). This alternative view of migration is way more positive than what we constantly hear or read in the media.

Since we are such a tremendously cosmopolitan club, I felt this applied to us all; grab me for a picture next time you're in the dojo!
